Changes To California Criminal Laws For Immigrants

On January 1, 2017, a statute went into effect that gives immigrants the ability to challenge previous criminal convictions. An immigrant can use Penal Code section 1473.7 if their attorney did not inform them of the immigration consequences of a conviction.  Even in cases where the immigrant has tried to vacate their conviction in the past and was denied, section 1473.7 allows them to try again.
